PRELIMINARY RACE ANALYSIS

I find it very useful to first "skim" through a race to determine if it might be a good 10-cent superfecta betting opportunity.  I briefly look at each horse in the race and make a quick assessment of its chances.  I just go with my first impression before I get trapped into the eventual "zigging" and "zagging".

I will use a blank sheet of paper and place each horse into one of the following four categories:

Possible 1st

Possible 2nd/3rd

Possible 4th

Off The Board*

*Horses you expect to finish 5th or worse.

If I can narrow down my possible 1st place finishers from 1 to 3 horses, then I believe I have a good "read" on the race and it is worth my time and money.  If I can't, I will just pass and look for another race.

During this process I will have also identified my possible 2nd/3rd and possible 4th place finishers, which should make putting my 10-cent superfecta bet together that much easier.  In addition, I will have identified my "off the board" horses that will not be included, which will help keep my costs down.
